Description
Fleur de Lys Sampler from the Canadian Journey Series. Jeannette wraps up her Canadian tour with a dive into French Canadian heritage. The sampler contains 34 bands, done in a palette of DMC and over-dyed silks. Many “specialty” stitches are used – there are diagrams and written instructions for all of them, making this design approachable – if you have patience (and Google), your initial skill level with specialty stitches will not be important.
Each band is described both in terms of how to execute the stitches, and in its significance or symbolism to the sampler as a whole. Jeannette includes wonderfully interesting tidbits of science, history and lore behind each subject. You will feel the richness and depth of Quebec as you work each band. A full French translation of the pattern is included. As Jeannette says,
Quebec… is a land rich in history and heritage, a place that evokes the ‘otherness’ in us. For many of us it is ‘La Belle Province’… I think we can all identify with a “cafe au lait” and sing “Alouette”, but I now know what a “caleche” (horse-drawn carriage) and a “cabane a sucre” (sugar shack) is.
